Discussion Questions

Discussion Questions:

1. How important is community in your walk with God? What did you learn about building

community from what Paul writes in Philippians 2:1-18?

2. What lessons do we learn about friction from Jesus’ example? In what ways do you

struggle with moving along with people you disagree with? What could change that?

3. Why is it important that Jesus’ sacrifice to the lowest of low points is followed up by super

exalting by God? Does this apply to our situations of being brought low? Why or why not?

4. What struggle have you had with grumbling? What causes grumbling? How does

grumbling add friction between us and other people as well as between us and God?

5. Make a list (mentally or physically) of 10 people you know well. Are they generally happy

or unhappy? Are they generally selfish or unselfish? How do these two things correlate?

Discussion Questions:

1. How would you describe your purpose for life and/or the mission of your life? How does

knowing and living out your purpose increase your joy?

2. What does it mean to exalt Christ in your life? What kinds of things are present in your life

that help people see Jesus in bigger and more brilliant ways?

3. Why is “to live is Christ” the only way that makes death gain? What struggles have you had

with making other things your life?

4. How is “to live is Christ” at odds with our culture’s view of retirement? What ways could

retirement be used to magnify Christ?

5. Why would Paul knowingly choose a path that will bring him suffering and agony? Why is it

so difficult to choose this path in our culture? What does “living as a citizen worthy of the

Gospel” look like?

Discussion Questions:

1. How can one experience joy when going through difficult situations?

2. How has “life happened” to you and your loved ones lately? How did Paul’s connection to

the Philippians help him to have joy and remember purpose during his difficulties? What

connections do you have to help you in this way?

3. What things feel like chains to you? How might God be using them to advance the Gospel?

4. What struggles do you have with focusing on what God has not done instead of seeing

what God has promised He will do? What specific promises are helpful and life-giving to

you?

5. Why does God speak in whispers? What kinds of things has He been whispering to you

lately?
